Lillian - Have you ever given "Dropout" a try? My daughter and I watch an episode of "Make Some Noise" every night. I was in the Groundlings in the early 80s with Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) and the nonpareil Phil Hartman, and Brennan Lee Mulligan is the first improv genius I've encountered who's the equal of Hartman. The dirtbag production values help the shows - it's just the best Improv talent in Los Angeles trying to make each other laugh. Plus no commercials!!

Wow, sounds like you’ve had some interesting experiences. I have some vague memories of watching Pee Wee’s Playhouse in the 90s, before he got busted in that movie theater.

I haven’t heard of either Dropout or Make Some Noise before. Looks like it’s a 2020s version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? Used to watch that with my parents growing up.

Skimmed this, but I stopped watching TV in 1981.

The boulevardier sounds like a good drink. My drink is a Manhattan or sometimes an Old Fashioned, this looks like a first cousin to those.

I love a good Manhattan. The Campari adds another layer of complexity. I think the traditional garnish for a boulevardier is just the orange peel, but I like to add a couple of Luxardo cherries as a little dessert.

Good on you for quitting TV in the 80s. I should’ve read for 20 more hours instead of watching Silo

When Lent is over, I will get a boulevardier at my favorite place.

Yes the cherry in the drink is my favorite dessert.

You’re in Chicago, right? What’s your favorite bar (if it’s not personal)?

I live and work in the suburbs, and I don't get out much!

The place near where I currently live, where I occasionally take a picture of a drink, is Grill 89 in Westmont.

In Chicago a favorite was The Glunz Tavern, which is a classic.

I recently had dinner with my wife at Miller's Pub on Wabash, and had a good drink.

One place I want to go but have not yet is The Victor Bar, which is run by two brothers, former colleagues.

There is no shortage of excellent places to get a drink in Chicago.

On a recent trip to Chicago I met a friend at the Victor Bar. Nice decor and great cocktail menu, but it was so unrelentingly loud at 7 on a Friday night we left without ordering drinks and instead had a beer and some potato pancakes at a quiet German tavern around the corner— Resi’s Bierstube. At some point I’d like to try the Victor’s cocktails, but only if I can have a conversation without losing my voice.

Resi's is nice. I went there years ago with a German-speaking friend. Glad to hear it still exists.

Did you not encounter the novels Silo is based on? I read only the first one (wool? I think) and it was a little amateur, a little unpolished, but grew better and more confident. Really it was like an attempt to retell the (much better books) City of Ember story with a couple of modifications that made things a little more adult than the YA Ember series. But better than watching bad TV.

Also isn’t Steve Zahn almost the best character in Tremé as DJ Davis?
